The obvious narrative is a speculative bubble popping. The delusion of AI-driven demand fading. But that misses the mechanism that turned a standard correction into a systemic crash. The real story is not about the chip cycle. It is about what happens when two stocks own an entire national index.
The Overlooked Angle: Index Concentration as a Leverage Amplifier
Most commentary focuses on the chip industry’s fundamentals: memory prices, HBM oversupply, export controls. That is surface noise. The overlooked angle is the structural fragility built into the KOSPI itself. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics together represent roughly 50% of the index by weight. That is not a diversification. It is a concentrated bet disguised as a market. When these two stocks move, the index moves - mechanically. And when they fall hard, the forced selling from margin calls, ETF rebalancing, and index arbitrageurs feeds into itself. The index does not just reflect the sell-off. What Most Commentary Gets Wrong

Commentators also point to circuit breakers and sidecars as if they failed. They did not fail. They worked exactly as designed. But they cannot solve a concentration problem. A 20-minute trading halt does not reduce the weight of SK Hynix from 25% to 10%. The halt just delays the forced selling. When trading resumes, the same pile-up of margin calls hits the same stocks.
The lazy take is “investors panicked.” Panic is a symptom, not a cause. The cause is that the index’s construction turned a normal correction into a liquidation avalanche. No amount of investor calm would have prevented it because the selling was mechanical, not emotional.
